Understanding a Child’s Pain: What to Do, How to Help * Also available as a Webinar* June 4, 2019 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Alberta Children's Hospital - Theatre This workshop is for parents and caregivers on how to help their child cope positively with painful medical procedures, tests and injuries of childhood. 90 minute session will include a presentation with discussion focusing on how a child’s pain is perceived, how to talk to your child about pain, and how to successfully coach them to help themselves to overcome fears and worries associated with medical interventions. The New Guidelines on Screen Time for Preschool-Aged Children: The Importance of Interaction in Early Language Acquisition June 5, 2019 @ 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Alberta Children's Hospital - Theatre In a world where 'screen time' is rapidly increasing, how we interact with our children is changing. We will present the revised guidelines on digital media use from the American Academy of Pediatrics (released in October 2016) with a focus on the impacts of screen time on the development of language in the preschool years. Understanding Childhood Trauma June 7, 2019 @ 11:15 AM - 12:45 PM Alberta Children's Hospital - Theatre Trauma can significantly impact a child, and those caring for them are often left with questions about how to best help. The impact of trauma on neurological development and attachment system will be explored, and how this presents in children’s behaviours. Caretakers will be given key strategies to help children impacted by trauma, and appropriate resources will be suggested. Getting Off the Couch! Inspiring a Healthier Lifestyle *Also available as a WEBINAR* June 13, 2019 @ 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM The Ability Hub This workshop will discuss the physical, mental health and social benefits of being active. For many people on the autism spectrum, getting to the gym or just having an active lifestyle can be challenging. Strategies for increasing recreational opportunities will be shared as well as how to build a social network for engaging in community and physical activities.
